Improve Range of Motion With Chiropractic
Limited range of motion is one of the most common problems we see in our patients at Markson Chiropractic, and it can be detrimental to your everyday life. Discover how chiropractic and massage therapy can provide injury prevention and better mobility.
Range of Motion Defined
For the body to move correctly, range of motion is essential. Inhibited range of motion can cause pain or discomfort or make it difficult to move your body parts the way you used to. The range of motion (ROM) of a joint or body part is expressed in degrees, and it is a measure of movement in that region. ROM relates to flexibility and determines your ability to move that body part without pain or discomfort. Range of motion may be severely restricted after an injury, trauma, or medical condition. For example, when patients suffer from back, neck, or shoulder pain, they may feel stiff, tight, and sore in these areas. These symptoms can make it difficult to carry on with everyday activities. In some cases, compensation patterns may even develop, leading to further dysfunction. The good news is that chiropractic can often alleviate these issues before reaching that point and promote injury prevention in the future.
The Chiropractic Solution
Often, physical therapists are considered experts in improving range of motion; however, did you know chiropractors can also improve mobility? Chiropractic manipulations and stretches may be able to help you regain movement and make limited movements a thing of the past.
Manipulations
You may have limited range of motion in your back, neck, or shoulders because your body is out of alignment. This is because your spine, joints, and muscles are designed to work together in a specific way. However, injuries and everyday wear and tear can cause things to fall out of alignment and limit your mobility. A chiropractic adjustment can put your body back into alignment so it can move the way it was designed.
Massage
Tight or inflamed muscles can cause stiffness and a limited range of motion. When your muscles are strained, you may be limiting your ROM even more by attempting to use them. A massage therapist may be able to give you a soft tissue massage to help loosen things up and improve circulation. As tight muscles disappear, you will feel more limber and loose.
Exercises
Chiropractors may also be able to help you mobilize your limited joints through exercises and stretches similar to those used in physical therapy. To improve flexibility, they may move your body parts passively for you and teach you active exercises you can do independently. An increase of mobility can help with injury prevention in the future.
